Review #860 (2021)
This is made purely from pot stills and is a straight Bourbon whisky. Even though it is 46%, it is quite mild on the nose. Corn, white fruits and citrusy/sour oak notes in the smell.
Some sweetness comes forward at first in the taste, alongside some lemongrass (and sour oak again?). Some nuts as well. The finish is warm and spicy, and in my opinion, the best part of this whisky.
I just can’t help getting these citrusy/sour oak notes in Balcones, which I don’t really care for. It’s a matter of taste of course, but for my palate, it’s too much. So much fine Bourbon out there, so unless the flavour profile changes, it’s not likely I will come back to this expression… I will give this 80/100 (19/20/21/20).
