Review #897 (2022)
This is a smoky single malt whisky (smoked with nettles), matured for 6 years and 6 months in a 1st fill ex-Bourbon barrel, then finished for 1 year and 6 months in a 2nd fill Rum cask. Only 355 bottles were made. Is this really above 60%? My nose can’t tell, that’s for sure! Light, with vanilla ice cream, bananas and citrusy notes in the smell.
The smoky notes comes forward in the taste. Some grassy and citrusy notes, an oily mouthfeel and some caramelized pineapple. The smoke hangs on for a while in the finish alongside the citrusy notes.
It’s a nice subtle, but noticeable, smoke you find in this whisky. Like being at a campfire in the (Danish) woods. I would love to try this with some more age, where the cask influence have rounded off the citrusy notes, and added some extra oak and spices. Can’t wait to try 10 year old Fary Lochan! I will give this 82/100 (20/20/21/21).
